When it comes to tackling any kind of project, especially the big, potentially life-changing ones, there’s no doubt that having a support network behind you makes it much more likely that you’ll succeed. It’s why programmes backed by peer support groups do so well, from weight loss to overcoming addiction.

This extends to both those taking part in literacy and numeracy schemes, and those delivering them. Learning and Work Institute’s stats show that learners have better outcomes if they feel that they’re part of a community, and mentors, volunteers and coaches benefit from colleague collaboration and support.

Shannon Trust has this concept at the heart of all our initiatives – a sense of community is central.

For learners, who may feel isolated and lacking in confidence:

  • knowing that they’re not alone
  • being able to share their stories
  • having the backing of an organisation with its foundations in prisoner experience

has huge potential for improving wellbeing and boosting self esteem.

For mentors, volunteers and coaches, who may need reassurance and confirmation that they’re on the right track:

  • feeling supported by a network of colleagues
  • having someone to turn to for help and advice
  • being part of a community of people working together for the best outcomes

helps them to build on their experiences and collaborate with each other to develop a ‘virtuous circle’ of improvement based on real-world feedback.

Regular volunteer meetings, community get-togethers and feedback sessions all provide opportunities for our invaluable team of colleagues to share what they do, how they do it and where they can see room for change. And, with direct access to Shannon Trust’s senior team, the flow of ideas and information is open, honest and two-way.

The result is clear in the letters our learners send us – words that they have worked hard with Shannon Trust to unlock. Here’s just one example:

“It’s brought me out of my shell – I was so nervous and frightened before. Today was the first time I’ve done a quiz and I got loads of it right. I love word searches, I’m quick on that. And I like reading story books. I’m looking forward to writing a letter to my family.

“I believe in myself now. I’m much more independent. I can’t get over that I can pick up a book and read it. It’s a miracle!”

If you would like to change someone’s life through learning, there are plenty of ways you can help.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragra

phs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin

editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, bloc

kquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
